Hi, I’m Kyle Hanson—a fifth-generation Montanan, husband, and father. I grew up in Bozeman, where sports and the outdoors shaped much of who I am. My curiosity about the wider world started early, inspired by an aunt who taught overseas, but I did not travel internationally until college. As part of a Division I tennis program—and the only American on the team my sophomore year—I was encouraged by my international teammates to see more of the world. That led me to study French and, 18 months later, spend a year abroad in France, splitting my time between Besançon and Nice while traveling extensively through Europe and North Africa. I was hooked. After graduation, I returned to France and Spain to play competitive tennis, coach seasonally, and continue exploring. My love for the outdoors also took me on self-supported climbing trips across South America, Europe, New Zealand, Mexico, and Alaska. Along the way, I served as a volunteer ski patroller, co-founded Denver Team Handball, and helped lead junior national athletes to Sweden for international competition. I built a one-room cabin in Silver Plume, Colorado, which sparked a lasting interest in construction and hands-on work. Eventually, I transitioned my work into healthcare and moved back to Montana—where, for one memorable summer, I lived in a tipi with two sheep and my border collie, Gracie.
My wife, Ali, and I met later in life—both of us were 37, and I was still living in that tipi. We connected quickly over our shared love of travel, food, skiing, and family, and we knew we wanted to build a life together. Before getting married, we took a three-month “around the world” trip to test both our relationship and our sense of adventure. That journey took us through Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Mongolia via the Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia, Latvia, and finally on a road trip across Turkey.
We never made a formal decision to travel with our kids—we simply kept going. Ali deserves much of the credit for making it happen. Travel is when our family is often at its best: together, unplugged, learning, laughing, adapting, and making memories. More than 50 countries and six continents later, it remains a central part of our lives. Today, I work full time in healthcare, and Ali and I also renovate older homes while managing rental properties and storage units. With our kids in local public schools, most of our trips now happen during school breaks, but the adventure continues. Over the years, we have learned practical ways to make family travel easier, more affordable, and more rewarding. As more friends and family asked us to share our experiences, stories, and photos, this site was born—and we hope it proves helpful and inspiring.
